Where's Mary?
I really, really hope there's a good reason why Mary Cheney didn't appear with the rest of her family at the end of Dick Cheney's speech at the Convention tonight. I may not vote for the guy, but I've admired his chutzpah and sincerity thus far. Please, Dick, don't give me a reason to hate you, that the Alan Keyes of the party played any role in this. Please, please tell me she just had a stomach flu or something.

Well you see Jason, she's gay. And he's a Republican. And that's just not totally smooth with everybody ;) hehehe

Kraorh,
Gosh, do you think Mary's decision not to appear could possibly have anything to do with the fact that her father's boss tried to write anti-gay bigotry into the Constitution of the United States of America? The "Alan Keyes" wing? She didn't show up because the George W. Bush wing of the party is trying to legislate away her rights, now and forever.
Actually, I think I'll post further on this topic later, because there's a lot to it. However, for the moment - I haven't done much looking yet, but to my knowledge, neither Mary nor anyone else has said why she wasn't there. So there's really no evidence here - only speculation on your part. There is at least one indisputable fact that contradicts your claim, which is, that Mary Cheney is actually working for the Bush-Cheney campaign. Clearly, if she felt that Bush was out to destroy her rights "forever," it would be odd that even with the family connection, she'd still work for them.
I'll write more on this later, but I disagree that even the "Bush" wing of the Republican Party is antigay, out to destroy the rights of gay people, anymore than Democrats, like Kerry and Edwards, are for opposing gay marriage. And in any event, gay marriage will be a default accepted position even within the GOP in 5-10 years max.

I notice your optimistic view of the Bush wing of the party is not shared by the Log Cabin Republicans, who have denounced Bush on this issue.
And in any event, gay marriage will be a default accepted position even within the GOP in 5-10 years max. Then explain the 2004 GOP platform.

Well, sure, but you invited speculation with your original post. In fact, *you* are the one who initially raised the possibility that Mary's absence might have something to do with Republican anti-gay bigotry.
Here's what we know: Mary Cheney was at the convention, and seen sitting in her father's box earlier in the week. As you say, she is is working on her father's campaign -- in fact, she's one of his top campaign aides. But she did not appear at his side on Wednesday night, and she was absent again last night as well. Cheney's other daughter, her husband, and their kids were all on stage. I don't know if Mary's partner was at the convention or not. A spokesman for Dick Cheney said it was Mary's choice not to appear on stage with her father and the rest of her family.
So let me ask you this -- if her conspicuous absence didn't have anything to do with her sexual orientation, why *do* you think she didn't appear on stage last night or the night before?
